Puppy  Desensitization

Puppies, just like babies need to be taught and shown what is safe and not scary. New is scary for babies, and many new things at once is super scary! On the flip side of things, if you are always introducing new things properly, then the puppies learn how to approach new things confidently. If you do not introduce puppies to new things, they will lack confidence, be shy and scared of anything they are unfamiliar with.

Puppies can be groomed as early as 8 weeks old, though we encourage you to pick their appointment after you feel they have become comfortable in their new environment and home. Puppies are very adaptable and this may only take a few days to a few weeks. We take puppies up to 4 months old without rabies vaccine. You should wait at least wait 48 hours after vaccines are administered, especially for the first time because there is always a risk of reactions to the vaccines.

Training is teaching dogs

Puppy Training

Training during these times is crucial for a well rounded, well behaved dog. We groomers take a lot of pride in our work, but it takes a settled calm dog to be able to groom to the best of our ability. If a pet is not well mannered on the grooming table, we have to alter our plans, as sharp objects against an unpredictable animal can be dangerous. This is why training your puppy to tolerate being handled is important.

They should be calm and neutral when up on elevated surfaces.

They should allow you to touch and bend their arms and paws.

If they will need a haircut they need to be okay with the hair on their chin being held.

You can also use an electric tooth brush or something that mimics the vibration of the clippers, to run them over the face and body to get them prepared for their first haircut

Grooming Needs for Their Entire Life

Your dog should be groomed at least every 6-8 weeks depending on their lifestyle, and how fast their grows. Even dogs with short hair should get professional baths this often to get any dead skin and coat off and cut down the natural oil buildup that their skin produces. Different coat types require different type of grooming appointments, but they should all be done once every two months or less for the wellbeing and overall health to the pet.
